On August 10, 2016 representatives from Erie 1 BOCES, Buffalo Public Schools, Orleans Niagara BOCES, the NYS Technical Assistance Center, NYSED, and the Career and Technical Education Department, hosted a job fair for prospective CTE teachers. Expecting 10-20 participants to be the definition of a successful campaign, the recruitment partners were surprised to welcome over 50 interested individuals.
Each guest met with public school administrators before directed to meet with John Popovich, chair of CTE, who reviewed the academic requirements for certification and explained how individuals can enter as a non-matriculated student and matriculate as a CTE major. Popovich will keep track of those who attended and report back on how many sign up for courses in the fall and spring semesters.
All parties were elated with the turnout and want to repeat this event at least twice annually as this was the most effective method they have found. Additionally a principal from WEMOCO BOCES attended and now hopes to work with CTE to replicate the career fair in the Rochester area, and perhaps offer classes at the WEMOCO BOCES in Spencerport.
The August 10 career fair was by far the most effective recruitment effort CTE staff have seen in a long time. Congrats!
